The Dunhinda Odyssey train was launched on April 5, 2024, to mark the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of train services from Colombo Fort to Badulla, which was introduced by the British. The maiden journey of Dunhinda Odyssey commenced at Colombo Fort railway station at 06.30 a.m. on April 5, under the patronage of Minister of Transport and Highways Bandula Gunawardena and distinguished guests. Earlier, the Sri Lanka Railway Department introduced two trains named “Ella Odyssey” and “Seethawaka Odyssey.” Dunhinda Odyssey is the third of the ‘Odyssey’ train series launched by Sri Lanka Railways with the aim of promoting the tourism industry.

What is the Dunhinda Odyssey train?

The Dunhinda Odyssey tourist train service offers an exquisite journey from Colombo Fort to Badulla, travelling through Kandy, Nanu Oya, and the picturesque city of Ella. The train stops at some of the most popular tourist attractions, which are located between Kandy and Badulla. Travelers can get off the train at these viewpoints and capture the scenic beauty of the surroundings. This amazing train journey will take you through stunning landscapes, beautiful greenery hills, fascinating waterfalls, and misty mountain ranges, showcasing the stunning landscapes and cultural beauty of Sri Lanka. The Colombo – Badulla railway line features 46 tunnels and 68 railway stations along the way, and covers a distance of 292 km.

Train No. 1001 Dunhinda Odyssey: Colombo Fort to Badulla
  • Every Tuesday, Friday & Sunday. Leaves at 06.30 AM from Colombo Fort railway station and reaches Badulla at 05.37 PM on the same day.
Train No. 1002 Dunhinda Odyssey: Badulla to Colombo Fort
  • Every Monday, Wednesday & Saturday. Leaves at 08.00 AM from Badulla and reaches Colombo Fort 06.51 PM on the same day.

Dunhinda Odyssey Train Ticket Prices

The train consists of four first-class cabins, three second-class cabins, and one third-class cabin with a canteen. The train fare for a first-class ticket will be Rs. 8,000, Rs. 6,000 for a second-class ticket, while a third-class ticket will be priced at Rs. 5,000 between Colombo Fort and Badulla/Ella.

  • First Class: 8,000 Rupees Per Person (One way)
  • Second Class: 6,000 Rupees Per Person (One way)
  • Third Class: 5,000 Rupees Per Person (One way)

  • For tourists, – Book Ella Odyssey train through your travel agent in Sri Lanka. But if you have already started your holiday in Sri Lanka, you may use one of above 3 options.
  • You need to reserve your seat 30 days prior to travel.
  • Directly from the following railway stations 14 days prior to the travel date, from 9.00 AM to 4.00 PM.

Dunhinda Odyssey will stop at the below Viewpoints

The train will stop at spectecular tourist attractions and view points along the way, including Horsetail Falls, Adam’s Peak (Sri Pada), St. Clair’s Falls, Elgin Falls, Summit Level, Tunnel No. 18 (Pattipola Tunnel), Idalgashinna Wind Gap, Kithal Ella Falls, Nine Arch Bridge and Demodara Loop. Travelers are allowed to get off the train at these viewpoints and capture the scenic beauty of these specific viewpoints.
